Oftentimes, there comes a point in any organization when you realize you need assistance in building the next steps to ensure the growth of your organization. Whether it is a new website, a mobile app, or a new cloud-based service many organizations turn to outsourcing their DevOps. While some will hire internally, many might only have the need for a short period and recognize the cost savings in hiring an outside company. These 6 tips will help you on your way to outsourcing your next DevOps project.
1. Start with a Clear and Concise Project Scope
This step starts before you reach out to any DevOps companies. It is critical that you have a clear written understanding of what your project entails with extensive details including parameters, tools, expected traffic, and which devices and countries users will come from.
2. Must-Have vs. Nice-To-Have
The nice thing about hiring a DevOps company is that most will have a team of developers with a wide range of skills and knowledge. If you are looking to save money and go with a smaller company or one man show, then an expertise list of Must-Have and Nice-To-Have skillsets is a good idea. While a smaller company might offer better savings you might not get the desired end results.
3. Ask for a Portfolio and References
All DevOps companies will have a portfolio or references for any prospective client to review. This is a common request, and honestly, if you don’t ask to see previous work they probably won't take you seriously. Review what they give you and if concerns arise, you might want to look elsewhere.
4. Consider the Logistics
When outsourcing a lot of people will look for companies within a certain distance to themselves, but depending upon your needs this might not be the best option. No matter the location of your selected contractor, make sure you discuss time availability, time difference if applicable, as well as the availability of the individuals working on your project.
5. Set Contractual Milestones – This is a MUST
During your project scope discussion and before the contract is signed, make sure you have your Milestones incorporated into your contract. If they are not written into your contract then there is no guaranty your timeframe will be met. I know you're probably saying, “That’s a no-brainer.” But in the rush to get your project started, you might forget something and this is one thing you don’t want to forget.
6. Get Everything in Writing
I know we said it above, but this is worth repeating. Make sure all of your expectations, stipulations, milestones and end product are written into a solid contract. In the rush to get started or to save money, some might not have a legal team look over a contract. We highly suggest having a lawyer review any contract you might sign.
These tips might not cover everything you need to consider before and during an outsourcing endeavor, but they will give you a solid base to start your DevOps hunt.
