Treats, Not Tricks Like Malware or Phishing
Throughout the month of October, we’ll provide numerous posts, infographics and even a video to highlight our team’s recommendations for protecting your organization from threats in cyberspace. Whether you’re a Network Administrator or a Chief Technology Officer, we’re putting together materials that you and your end-users can utilize to minimize your chances of a hack.
With an estimated 1 in 3 organizations lacking a Cyber security emergency response plan, Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger should not be your biggest fear during the month of October. Let’s get started! Here are some basics that we’ll expand upon throughout the month.
Stop. Think. Connect
It has been over 8 years since the Stop, Think, Connect initiative was started. The goal was for people to feel safer and more secure while navigating online. While many of the tips for individual consumers may not apply, others do hold true. Strong passwords are critical but the longer and more complex, the harder they are to remember. Federal agencies recommend that you use a sentence or special characters to form a word or phrase that makes sense to you. Make sure that you use different passwords for each account. However, strong passwords alone will not allow you to be 100% secure. It is vital that you implement strong authentication elements such as biometrics which may include a fingerprint or facial recognition identifier. This can serve as a back-up in case your password becomes compromised. Since most attempts to gather private information are based on phishing, or seemingly valid emails from scammers, do not click on links unless you are aware that they have been sent from a trusted source.
For over 15 years, The Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance have been the driving forces for promoting Cybersecurity awareness. Every week, during the month of October, different themes are chosen that encompass all aspects of Cybersecurity such as “Safeguarding the Nation’s Critical Infrastructure.” They also discuss how cybersecurity guidelines can influence the role that each employee plays in reducing the possibility of an online attack.
Join us throughout the month of October as we share tips, tricks, and tactics to help safeguarding your organization from a cyber threat.
